Exotic Beauty
The Madagascar Palm is an exotic tropical beauty that resembles a mix between a cactus and a palm tree. In fact, it is neither a palm tree o a cactus but a member of the succulent family.
Named after its place of origin, the Madagascar Palm has a thick grey trunk full of large thorns, topped with shiny elongated green leaves that resemble palm tree fronds. When young, the trunk is thin, but as it matures, it becomes bulbous. Although it takes around ten years to flower for the first time, Madagascar Palms grown as houseplants rarely flower. If it does, it flowers a beautiful pink flower late Spring to early Summer.
In its native habitat, it can grow up to 20 feet tall, but it usually reaches around 15 feet tall and 8 feet wide when outdoors. Indoors, it typically grows around 6 feet tall.
It is a great container palm and can be taken outdoors during the summer. As an indoor plant, it is really beautiful on tabletops and coffee tables.
Because of its superficial root system and its water reservoir trunk, it is recommended for indoor growth. Madagascar Palms are succulents and store the water in their trunk, making them resistant to droughts- perfect for those who forget to water their plants! It thrives in arid soil, full sun and lots of bright light.
Its ease of care and exotic palm-like beauty makes the Madagascar Palm a favorite!
