Agave tequilana, or blue agave, is a succulent native to Mexico, famous as the sole plant used to make tequila, agave syrup, and other spirits like mezcal. It's recognizable by its spiky, blue-green leaves and takes 7-10 years to mature, at which point its sugary core (piña) is harvested for fermentation. This low-maintenance plant thrives in full sun, well-draining soil, and warm climates, making it popular for xeriscaping, but it is not frost-tolerant.
