Durable, Cold-Hardy Palm Tree standing up to extreme weather conditions, including temps into the mid-teens, slow-growing, and a good fit for smaller landscapes.
Why Choose a European Fan Palm?
If you’ve always desired to bring a bit of tropical paradise home with you but feel your location gets too cold in winter then a European Fan Palm is the tree that makes your dreams a reality. Whereas many varieties of palms knock on death’s door with cold and freezing winter temperatures, this palm keeps thriving without skipping a beat.
European Fan Palms are sure to stand out in the landscape with their bushy canopies of fan-shaped fronds filled with finger-like and deeply divided leaflets. Each blue-green or grayish-green frond grows around 2 feet long and wide and is attached to a leaf stalk that is around 4 feet long.
If the attractive and elegant canopy wasn’t enough, the brown curving trunks resemble a pine cone as they’re lined from top to bottom with scales. As the palm matures it develops multiple trunks adding to the tree’s appeal. These slow-growers obtain a mature height of 8 to 15 feet and a spread of 6 to 10 feet.
Adding to the palm’s colorful appeal are the panicles of bright yellow flowers that bloom in spring. The spent flowers then develop into small round orange or yellow fruits that ripen to brown in fall. All stages of the palm bring interest and color to the landscape throughout all the seasons of the year.
If your idea of fun gardening doesn’t involve the constant care of a fussy plant then you can’t go wrong with a European Fan Palm. When planted in preferred conditions this tree is a breeze to care for and makes a superb specimen or accent plant.
Is it Cold-Hardy in My Area?
Many types of palms require a subtropical or tropical climate to thrive in winter but European Fan Palms are an exception. These trees grow well throughout USDA hardiness zones 8 through 11, making them suitable additions to landscapes that experience colder temperatures in winter.
It tolerates winter lows of 20°F and will even withstand brief dips to 15°F without suffering damage. Of course, you’ll probably want to do a bit of protection if extreme cold temperatures are on the horizon.
Adding a thick layer of organic mulch over the root zone helps insulate it and keep it warm. You should also give the palm a deep drink of water the day before cold weather arrives, as it also helps insulate the root system keeping it warm.
If the palm isn’t too large, you can cover it with sheets or burlap. Stringing holiday lights through the canopy and around the trunk not only help with warmth but also add a bit of lighted appeal to the area at night.
How Big Does It Get?
European Fan Palms grow slowly (a rate of 6 inches per year) and will eventually obtain a mature height of around 8 to 15 feet and a width of 6 to 10 feet. This makes them suitable additions used in smaller landscapes or smaller areas of the landscape like a side yard.
How Much Sun Does It Require?
The palm is versatile when it comes to the amount of sun it requires for healthy growth. It grows well situated in a site receiving full sun to partial shade. However, if planted in too much shade the palm loses a bit of its compact shape.
What About Soil and Water?
Although European Fan Palms tolerate a range of well-drained soils, growing it in fertile soils that drain well produces the best growth.
Once established, the palm is drought-tolerant. However, while it establishes itself in the planting site you should water several times weekly for the first few months. Thereafter, you can water weekly, depending on your local weather conditions. If you forget to water don’t worry because the palm’s growth won’t suffer.
Is It Easy to Maintain?
If you’re looking for a tree that’s easy to maintain then a European Fan Palm is the right choice. These hardy and durable palms aren’t bothered by pests or disease so you won’t be spending hours and cash keeping it healthy.
The only maintenance involved is trimming off the fronds when they turn completely brown and are dead. It’s best to wait for the fronds to completely die before removing them as the palm is still gaining nutrients from them.
What About Fertilizing?
European Fan Palms will benefit from regular applications of a fertilizer specific to palms three to four times yearly. Starting in spring, apply a slow-release blend spread evenly under the canopy, always following label instructions on amounts. Water the fertilizer into the soil after applying. Apply the last application in September.

Q: How often should I water my palms?
A: In general, palms should be watered daily with 4 to 5 gallons of water for the first two weeks until the root system is established. Ensure that the soil is wet and not soggy. Too much water may cause permanent damage. Depending on the type of palm and time of year, watering may be decreased to twice a month or less once the tree is established. Make sure you water the trees from the bottom up. Watering from the top down can cause rotting. Soil that has good drainage is important to help prevent over saturation and adding sand to the soil mixture can help with drainage. Placing mulch around the base of the tree and not against the trunk can also help with retaining water.
For cold hardy palms, watering will vary depending on the time of year and the temperature. Here is a guideline for how much to water in any given season.
Winter (60 degrees of less) no need to water, except for the first 30 days after installation. (5 gallons or till mote is full)
Spring (75 degrees or less) water palm once a week. (5 gallons or till mote is full)
Beginning of summer (90 degrees or less) 2-3 times a week
Heat of summer (90 degrees and above) 4-5 times a week
Q: When do I apply fertilizer to my palm tree?
A: Newly planted palms should not be fertilized until they put out a new spear. For palms planted from the Georgia/Tennessee border down to Atlanta, apply fertilizer in three applications. In heavy clay soils use half the recommended amount of fertilizer, and do not apply granular fertilizers after August 1. Be sure to fertilize only during the growing season (between April 1 and August 1).
Q: It is a good idea to correctly support larger, newly planted palms?
A: Larger palms will require some form of bracing to maintain stability during the first six to eight months after installation. Three equidistantly-spaced braces are used to support the palm. If Atlanta Palms installs your palm tree, we handle the bracing.
Q: When should I prune my palm tree?
A: The only time you should prune your palm tree is when the fronds are discolored, broken or pointing to the ground at more than a 90 degree angle. Palms get most of their energy from their fronds, so it’s important to be careful not to remove too many.
Q: Why are drip irrigation systems preferable to sprinklers?
A: Both drip irrigation and sprinklers are good irrigation systems for your palm trees. Drip irrigation is designed to have deeper saturation into a specific area. Sprinklers (spray irrigation) will only saturate the top 3-5 inches per watering cycle whereas Palms root balls are 2-3 feet deep and require a deeper water saturation to develop new roots. Newly planted palms can suffer root loss with a lapse in deep water saturation especially during the hotter and drier summer months.

Job well done. Enjoying the palms.
European Fan Palm
We received great advice from Ricky Hleap regarding our recent purchase of a European Fan Palm which we planted on our newly constructed outdoor patio. It looks great and together with 3 windmill palms they make a great statement in our backyard.
Tropical Paradise found
Finally, a reputable palm tree nursery here in the Atlanta area ! Waited many years for this place to open ! Now I have 10 palm trees and 2 more coming. My favorites are Sabals, European, Mules, Pindo's and Windmill's. They have sago's too that are pretty hardy. Ricky helped me decide which palms to purchase and educated me on care. They delivered each of them and installed them precisely where I wanted. I have a company building a pond with waterfalls that will compliment my palm trees and make me feel as though I have a slice of tropical paradise in my backyard ! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. I love this place, Ricky and his incredible staff.
Great products , great pricing. Thoroughly enjoyed working with Ricky and his team. Would work with them again….
Wonderful experience with Atlanta Palms. We already had a couple of palms around our pool and wanted to make a new addition. They helped us select a European fan palm to enhance our collection. Our new palm was very healthy and well priced. We will be back!
